Retreat to Berkeley County for a healthy dose of solemn tradition and peaceful culture. Located on the Cooper River is one of the crown Jewels of Berkeley County, the Monastery of Our Lady of Mepkin. Mepkin has a distinguished history. The 3000 acre tract originally was called Mepkin Plantation by Henry Laurens, who built a home here circa 1762. Mepkin Plantation was restored twice, after being burned first by the British and again by the Union.

The plantation had many owners throughout its history. Most recently, it was the final home of Henry Luce, former editor and publisher of Time and Life Magazines and his wife, The Honorable Clare Booth Luce. Both are buried on the grounds.

The Luces bequeathed much of the historic property to the Catholic Church. Today, Mepkin is a monastery of extraordinary peace and beauty. An ancient alee of live oaks welcomes visitors to its gardens and chapel.

The good earth of the Santee Cooper Region provides fertile ground for several noted Gardens, Luce Garden, Cypress Gardens and Swan Lake Iris Gardens in Sumter to name a few. At Swan Lake the beauty of the flowers is rivaled by the 8 different species of Swans that glide gracefully among them.

Finally, a visit to Camden, South Carolina. This region is known as “The Old English District,” because of the many Revolutionary War battles fought here. Similarity to British names and strong ties to English tradition are evident throughout the region.
